PROJECT WITH
GOETHE INSTITUTE
In the second half of 2020, Instituto Maracá developed the Project for Strengthening and Diffusion of Mbyá-Guarani Traditional Indigenous Knowledge and Practices of Aldeia Rio Silveira in Times of Pandemic, financed by the International Assistance Fund of the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs, by the Goethe Institute and by other partners: www.goethe.de/hilfsfonds .
The project created conditions for us to continue working in times of social isolation, with the construction of a meeting house, a seedling nursery, an office and a bathroom. These spaces are necessary for us to be able to work remotely during the period of social isolation, and also to promote actions, activities and projects with the community of the Rio Silveira village.
The houses were built by community members using traditional Guarani-Mbya building techniques. Both conventional building materials and raw materials found in the Atlantic Forest were used.
The construction process represented an important moment of exchange of knowledge between the members of the community in which the youngest could learn about traditional techniques and other knowledge related to the construction of houses, housing, meanings and the importance of houses, among other topics.
Through this initiative, we can also equip the workspace in the Rio Silveira village with a computer, internet, printer, external hard drive and cell phones.
With this infrastructure, we were also able to develop research activities and dissemination of Guarani knowledge about agriculture, health, housing, memory and history, seeking to relate this knowledge and the creation of collective and culturally appropriate strategies for the protection of the community against Covid-19. .
